ದೀಪದಡಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ಕತ್ತಲು ಅನ್ನೋದಕ್ಕೆ, ಅಂಬಿಕಾನಗರದ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambikanagar) ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಉತ್ಪಾದನ ಘಟಕದಿಂದ ಕೇವಲ 15 ಕಿ.ಮೀ ದೂರ ಇರುವ ಕಲಬಾವಿ ಒಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ದಾಂಡೇಲಿಯಿಂದ ಅಂಬಿಕಾನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುವ ಕುಳಗಿ ಕ್ರಾಸಿನಿಂದ ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ 5 ಕಿ. ಮೀ. ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮತ್ತೆ, ಎಡಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಒಂದು ಕಾಲು ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಾರು 3 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ನಡೆದರೆ ಕಲಬಾವಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತೆ. ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಇರೋದು 15 ರಿಂದ 20 ಮನೆಗಳು, ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೊಮ್ಮನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಡ್ಯಾಮಿನ ಹಿನ್ನೀರು, ಒಂದು ಶಾಲೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಸುತ್ತಲು ಕಾಡು. ಊರಿನವರು ಬೆಳಗ್ಗೆ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಅಂತ ದಾಂಡೇಲಿಯ ಕಡೆ ಹೋದರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮರಳೋದು ಸಂಜೆ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಮುಳುಗುವ ಹೊತ್ತಿಗೆ. ಆ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಒಂದು ಟ್ರಾಕ್ಸ್ ದಾಂಡೇಲಿಯಿಂದ ಬಂದು ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಕಾಲ್ನೆಡಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲ ಸ್ವಂತ ವಾಹನದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರಬೇಕಷ್ಟೆ.
ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗೋದ್ರಿಂದ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರೋ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನ ನೋಡ್ಕೊಳೋಕೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನ ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗ್ತಾರೆ, ಆ ದಿನ ಆ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಶಾಲೆಗೇ ಚಕ್ಕರ್! ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳಂತೂ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲಿಗೆ ದಾಂಡೇಲಿಗೆ ಬರಬೇಕು ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಸುತ್ತಲು ಕಾಡು ಇರೋದ್ರಿಂದ ಮನೆಯವರು ಮುಂದೆ ಓದೋಕೆ ಕಳ್ಸೋದೆ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗಾಗಿ ವನವಾಸಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣದವ್ರು ಒಂದು ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯವರಿಗೆ ತರಬೇತಿ ನೀಡಿ, ನೇಮಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇದು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೂ ಸಹಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ.ಊರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಶಾಲೆ ಅಂತ ಏನೋ ಇದೆ ಆದ್ರೆ ಅದು ಬರಿ ಹೆಸರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಇರೋದು. ನಾವು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ 5 ನೇ ತರಗತಿ ಹುಡುಗನನ್ನ ಮಾತಾಡಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅವನಿಗಿನ್ನೂ ಅಕ್ಷರ ಬರೆಯುವುದು ಓದುವುದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಾರದ್ದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ ಆ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟ ಅರ್ಥವಾಯ್ತು. 40 ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿರುವ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಅಂತ ಕಾನೂನು ಹೇಳಿದ್ರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಇರೋ 25 ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು ಇದ್ದಾರೆ! ಯಾಕೆ ಅಂತ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ತಿಳಿದಿದ್ದು ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಗಂಡ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಅನ್ನೋ ವಿಷಯ. ಅವರ ಸಮಯ, ಅನುಕೂಲ ನೋಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಬರುವ ಇವರು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಡುವುದು ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲೇ ಇದೆ. ಹೇಗೂ ಸರ್ಕಾರ 7 ನೇ ತರಗತಿವರೆಗೆ ಕಡ್ಡಾಯವಾಗಿ ಉತ್ತೀರ್ಣಮಾಡಲೇಬೇಕು ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿರೋದ್ರಿಂದ ಇವರು ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನು ಪಾಸು ಮಾಡಿ, ಹಾಗೆ ಹೇಳೋಕಿಂತ, ಮುಂದಿನ ತರಗತಿಗೆ ತಳ್ಳಿ, ಕೈ ತೊಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ತಾರೆ.
ಶಾಲೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಕೂಡ ಕ್ಲಾಸ್ ಮುಗಿದ ನಂತರ ನೇರ ಈ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿಗೆ ಬರ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲ ಈ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲೇ ಮನೆಪಾಠ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತೆ. ಆದರೆ K.P.C ಕಾಲೋನಿಯಿಂದ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕರೆಂಟ್ ಹೋಗೋದ್ರಿಂದ ಸೀಮೆಯೆಣ್ಣೆ ದೀಪ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಕ್ಯಾಂಡಲ್ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ಓದ್ಕೊತಾರೆ. ಈ ತರಹದ 40 ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿಗಳು ವನವಾಸಿ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣದ ಆಶ್ರಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಆದ್ರೆ ಈ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ಮೂಲಸೌಕರ್ಯಗಳ ಕೊರತೆ ಇದೆ. ಬರೆಯಲು ಸ್ಲೇಟ್, ಬಳಪ, ಓದಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿಲು ಕಥೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು, ಭೂಪಟ, ವಿದ್ಯುತ್ ಕೊರತೆ ಇರೋದ್ರಿಂದ 'ಸೋಲಾರ್ ಲೈಟ್'ಗಳ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಯಾವುದೊ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಹಬ್ಬ ಆಚರಿಸಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಗಳನ್ನ ಮರೆತುಬಿಡೋ ನಾವು ಇಂತಹ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಕುಂದು ಕೊರತೆಗಳನ್ನ ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿ ಕೈಲಾದ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹಾಯ ಒದಗಿಸಿದರೆ ಕತ್ತಲಲ್ಲಿರೋ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಭವಿಷ್ಯ ಬೆಳಕಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ನಾವು ಅಂಬಿಕಾನಗರಕ್ಕೆ ಇದು 3 ನೇ ಬಾರಿ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿ ಹೋದಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿ ನಿಲಯಗಳ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಪರಿಶೀಲನೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ವಿ, ಅದರ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಎರಡನೇ ಬಾರಿ ಕೆಲವು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನ ಹಂಚಿ, ಕಂಪ್ಯೂಟರ್ ಗಳನ್ನ ಅಳವಡಿಸಿದೆವು. ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಅಂಗನವಾಡಿಗೆ ಭೇಟಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಕುಂದು ಕೊರತೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಿಸಿ ನಮ್ಮಿಂದ ಮಾಡಬಹುದಾದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿದೆವು. ಅದರಂತೆ ಈ ವರದಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ. ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇದ್ದು ನಮ್ಮ ಜೊತೆ ಕೈ ಜೋಡಿಸುವುದಾದರೆ ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕೆಳಗಿರುವ ಮಿಂಚೆ ಮೂಲಕ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಬಹುದು. ಕೆಳಗಿನ ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕವನದೊಂದಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಮಾತು ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ...

kalabaavi anganavaaDi
Recently we (Anup, Me, and Manju) had been to the 'anganavaadi' at Kalabaavi, which is 15KM away from Ambikanagar(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambikanagar), and we want to share our experience with all of you.
On the way from Dandeli to Ambikanagar take a left at Kulagi cross and after passing for 5KM take a left and walk for 3KM to reach Kalabaavi. Buses/Jeeps are available till Kulagi cross but from there it has to be own transport. There is also a Trax vehicle from Dandeli to Kalabaavi two times a day, once in the morning and next in the evening. It has around 20 families, a school and a temple. Just next to the village you can enjoy backwaters of bommanahalli dam. People here are dependent on dairy, farming, and day-labour at Dandeli for their earnings. So they leave the elder kids at home to take care of the little kids and home and everyone will be off to work and the child's schooling is thus stopped!!.
To help these kinds of Vanavaasi Kalyana has started a anganavaadi at Kalabaavi and has trained and appointed Preeti to look after it. But this anganavaadi still needs more improvements to help the kids to build their basic knowledge infrastructure. We talked to Preeti and got to know that there is need for more slates, maps, chalk, story books, toys for the little kids & solar lamps as there is frequent power cuts (this time it was a for a week! I guess nobody in cities could even imagine life withour electricity for a day atleast!). This anganavaadi is not only helping the little kids but also the school kids. Children will gather here immediately after the school for whom Preeti will conduct the tutions.
We talked to a 5th standard student and he was having difficulties in reading and writing, no not because of any disease as in Taare Zameen par, but because of the status of education they were getting in the local govt. school. There were 2 teachers (husband and wife) in the school for 25 kids, whereas the govt. says that 2 teachers will be provided only for those schools which has more than 40 children. These so called teachers used to come to school as per their convenience and teaching was too poor. The anganavaadi here is helping these children as well for their studies.
Vanavaasi Kalyana, is running 40 anganavaadi's of these kind in surrounding places. Based on the situation of kalabaavi anganavaadi, we were able to get an estimate of others as well. So we planned to help them by providing the needed. We have been in touch with Vanavaasi kalyana for more than year, and this was our third visit. We have worked (and still working) for their hostels at Ambikanagar, Dandeli, and Chipageri, by providing books, computers (with help of Cisco, and people in and out of Cisco).
